Workshop: Opportunities in the fight for information safety, SRCCON, Minneapolis, July 2025

Too much data.

Heading to Minneapolis for SRCCON 2025 to discuss information safety with Yanan Sun and Holmes Wilson.

News organizations have been collecting excessive user data on our sites for way too long. We enable third-party harvesting through external platforms and leaky tools, all for marginal optimization gains. Marketing cookies track our readers across the web, building detailed profiles for advertisers โ€“ and that ad revenue keeps declining anyway. What if our data gathering became much more intentional and targeted?

I can't see the U.S. adopting GDPR-style protections anytime soon (or ever). But maybe we journalists here could impose data minimization standards on ourselves as part of a duty of care to audiences. Do best practices exist? What would that look like?

Join us if you're attending tomorrow. I'll share what we learn in my next newsletter.
